Steam enables remote downloads from web or mobile

by on May.18, 2012, under Xbox

It’s now even easier to buy too many games from Steam. Valve has implemented remote downloading, allowing you to manage your PC’s Steam collection remotely, from anywhere you can access the website or mobile app.

Remote downloading lets you start a download on your computer from any of these other sources, and have them “installed and ready to play on your arrival.” In other words, you can buy a game from the mobile app and have it download automatically to your home PC, or reinstall something else from your Steam collection remotely.

The Store will even ask you upon purchase if you’d like to remotely install your new game, if it notices you’re shopping from away from your computer.

EA and Activision settle in Call of Duty lawsuit

by on May.18, 2012, under Xbox

EA and Activision have reached a settlement in a lawsuit that began two years ago, pertaining to the departure of Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella. EA had been accused of secretly recruiting the pair while they were still at Activision.

No details about the settlement are currently available, but both companies said today that they will file a settlement agreement in Los Angeles’ California state court.

Former Infinity Ward developers Jason West and Vince Zampella sued Activision in 2010 after being fired, claiming damages of $36 million from unpaid royalties associated with Modern Warfare 2, which launched in 2009. After leaving Activision, the pair began their own studio, Respawn Entertainment, and inked a publishing deal with EA. Since then, West and Zampella’s claim rose to $1 billion and Activision countersued with EA as a defendant.

Activision recently paid out $42 million to the Infinity Ward Employee Group, though not as a settlement; IWEG said it would pursue litigation and is still scheduled for trial May 29.

The settlement news comes the same day as a report on Activision’s “dirt”-digging tactics has surfaced, stating that Activision launched an information-gathering IT spree on West and Zampella just before the launch of Modern Warfare 2, intended to see them both fired. Activision called it “Project Icebreaker.”

No joke.

In Project Icebreaker, Activision’s George Rose asked the IT department to access West and Zampella’s email, voicemail and computer without anyone’s knowledge, a court filing given to Giantbomb by West and Zampella’s attorneys shows. The orders reportedly came from Activision CEO Bobby Kotick. Activision attempted to use third-party security specialists and threw around the idea of staging a fake fumagation to get into West and Zampella’s offices, the report says.

But now the case is settled — any verdict on the level of sanity of gaming companies is, however, still out.

Here’s the first Forza Horizon screenshot

by on May.18, 2012, under Xbox

Back when Forza Horizon was first officially announced by Microsoft and Playground Games back in March, all we had to gaze upon was a montage of desperately pretty cars and people, living the kind of life you’d expect someone with that kind of a car to live.

Now, though, we’ve got our first real look at the game in the form of the screenshot above, which features the 2013 SRT Dodge Viper, some rocks, an extremely flat American highway and the same vignette framing we’ve come to expect from Forza in-game screenshots. Granted, this is but a single image, but from where we’re sitting it sure does look a hell of a lot like a Forza game, which is reassuring considering that this is Playground Games’ first spin behind the franchise’s wheel.

Halo 4′s ‘Infinity’ multiplayer to introduce Spartan Ops, War Games

by on May.16, 2012, under Xbox

As the November 6 launch of Halo 4 approaches, Microsoft is doling out more information about its multiplayer modes, collectively known as “Infinity Multiplayer” (surprise!). The game will introduce a brand new mode called Spartan Ops, which tells the story of the UNSC Infinity, the massive ship that serves as Halo 4′s multiplayer hub (pictured). Spartan Ops will serve as an episodic continuation of Halo 4′s campaign, with weekly cinematic episodes that “center on the UNSC Infinity leaders and crew, and a new team of Spartans – Majestic Squad.” Each episode will include new missions, allowing one to four players to “explore the corners of Requiem in these objective-based missions, and help uncover the secrets of the mysterious Forerunner world.”

Halo 4′s competitive multiplayer will be known as War Games and, as previously detailed, will offer plenty of character progression and customization, such as armor specializations that enable “combat enhancements” tailored to specific play styles.

Both War Games and Spartan Ops are included with the standard edition of Halo 4, though those willing to pony up the dough for the $99 special edition will also receive 9 maps (to be doled out across three map packs after launch) and early access to six armor specializations.

Respawn Entertainment’s big reveal won’t be at E3

by on May.16, 2012, under Xbox

Respawn Entertainment employees will attend this year’s E3, but no, the studio won’t be showing any new project at the big show. “Some of us will be present at E3, but we won’t be showing anything or doing any press related to the game,” Respawn community manager Abbie Heppe told Joystiq.

Thus far, little information exists on Respawn’s first project. Aside from a single, extremely blurry screen and news that it’s an EA Partners title, Respawn has kept the game out of the public eye. But with a team comprising many ex-Infinty Ward folks – the same folks who helped launch Call of Duty into the world of sports playoff trailer debuts – it’s hard to imagine Respawn working on anything small.

Respawn wouldn’t tell us whether the mystery project will be revealed this year, nor if the studio would attend the various gaming events scattered across the next several months. We’re hoping for a surprise reveal during Tokyo Game Show, just to mess with the Japanese market.

Will Microsoft call the next Xbox "Xbox 8"?

by on May.16, 2012, under Xbox

There have been a lot of rumors about the next version of Microsoft’s Xbox console. Officially, the company isn’t saying anything about its plans for the next Xbox and they have also said it won’t be talking about it at E3 2012 in June. However, a new rumor claims that Microsoft could be thinking of an interesting name for the next hardware iteration of the Xbox.

The fan site ThisisXbox.com, citing an unnamed source that recently worked at a “well known combined Publisher and Developer”, claims that Microsoft is contemplating calling the next Xbox “XBOX 8.” That name certainly would be in line with Microsoft’s other big product launches for 2012; namely Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.

The same story claims that Microsoft is working on an enhanced version of Xbox Live, code named “Infinity”, that would handle downloads and apps for “XBOX 8″, Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. Microsoft has already announced that Xbox Live will be integrated into Windows 8 when it launches later this year but details about that integration have yet to be announced.

Finally, this same story claims that Microsoft is working on having some kind of backwards compatibility feature for “Xbox 8″ for Xbox 360 games, under the code name “Xbox Loop”.

None of this is official, so take it with a huge grain of salt. However, Microsoft has admitted that it is making an effort to link many of its products together, especially with its Metro interface, so this rumor isn’t outside the realm of possibility.

‘FIFA 13′ introduces First Touch Control features this fall

by on May.15, 2012, under Xbox

FIFA 13 is introducing five “game-changing” features this fall, including Complete Dribbling, First Touch Control and Attacking Intelligence, EA Sports announced today.

Complete Dribbling is influenced in part by the reboot of FIFA Street this year. This feature offers 360 degree mobility with the ball, offering users the ability to face their opponent at all times and giving players the chance to be more creative in one-on-one opportunities.

Attacking Intelligence lets players break down defenses more easily, alter runs to create more openings, and pull defenders out of position.

First Touch Control eliminates near-perfect ball control for all players and creates more uncertainty with factors such as defensive pressure, trajectory, and velocity of the pass. This gives defenders a greater chance to take back possession.

The improved Player Impact Engine lets defenders use their size and strength to win back possession or alternatively force opponents into poor touches.

Tactical Free Kicks allows the user position up to three players over the ball, do dummy runs and create elaborate free kicks. In response, opponents can strategically add or subtract players to their wall or send a single player out to intercept the shot.

FIFA 13 will also include Improved Career Mode, improvements to Head-to-Head Seasons mode, new features for the live EA SPORTS FIFA online service and 500 officially licensed clubs.

Additional features will be announced in the next coming months.

FIFA 13 will be available on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, while versions are also confirmed for Vita, Wii, 3DS, iOS, PSP AND PS2.
